I had logged over 10,000 hours before I became a flight instructor.  I do flight instruction because I enjoy it.  A flight instructor must know each student individually and tailor the lessons to the student's previous experiences and future goals.  The student must conclude each lesson feeling uplifted and excited about the next lesson.  An instructor must be genuinely interested in each student and his or her progress while continuously seeking to improve instructional technique.
